Memphis, Tennessee
Ritchie Smith Associates joined an international team to design the final phase of the striking new boat landing and visitor center that sits at the foot of Beale Street on the Mississippi River. The terminal building and docking facilities for steamboats were built in the initial phase, with a unique helical ramp connected to a floating dock that adjusts to fluctuating river levels. In Phase 4B, RSA addressed pedestrian accessibility, collaborated on riverbank stabilization, and designed the planting plan for the terraced park, plaza, and streetscape. For terraces below the vegetative line, RSA recommended a concrete revetment compatible with the adjacent historic Cobblestone Landing. RSA’s knowledge of local soils, climate, and plants and familiarity with the river dynamics informed the plan that emphasizes the distinct character of the river’s edge. This new downtown Memphis waterfront amenity has become a popular attraction for residents and visitors.
