River Tower

Memphis, Tennessee

River Tower, built as the flagship Holiday Inn in the 1960s, is now a residential condominium offering expansive views of the Mississippi River and the city skyline. As part of the revitalization, Ritchie Smith Associates redesigned the site to update landscape features and to create new open space amenities. A terrace for outdoor gathering was built adjacent to the public areas in the tower and enhanced with flowering cherry trees and a low seat wall. The pool terrace was extended with a grass-covered landform that also screens nearby parking. Beyond the pool, a new lawn panel planted with goldenrain trees reaches toward the river's edge. Looping throughout the green space is a walkway for strolling.
