The Hope & Healing Center is a preventive healthcare facility operated by the Church Health Center, an organization that provides affordable medical care for the working uninsured. Landscape designs by Ritchie Smith Associates for the rehabilitated site included an entrance plaza and walled garden. The entry was defined with a threshold bridge over a stylized dry stream bed, to symbolize the transition to a healthier lifestyle. The stream was designed with alternating bands of paving embedded with river rock and ornamental grasses that reflect the geometry of the building. An enclosed garden, with curvilinear seat walls and informal beds of lush planting, was created for private meditation and outdoor group therapy sessions.
