Memphis, Tennessee
Ritchie Smith Associates provided site and landscape design for the new forensic center at the edge of downtown Memphis. The limited landscape space on the tight urban site was designed to create a pleasant setting for staff and detailed to complement the clean lines of the architecture. Outdoor spaces include plants that offer seasonal change and varied interest to enhance employees' daily comings and goings. The central courtyard provides seating options for conversation and private breaks to staff who work around the clock.
Site design and selection of planting and paving materials support State of Tennessee Sustainability Guidelines. The visitor parking court was designed with permeable pavers to slow and detain stormwater runoff. Low energy-demand site lighting fixtures, drip irrigation, and site furnishings with recycled content were specified for efficient resource use. The planting was maximized to mitigate the urban heat island effect and to enhance the visual appeal of the modest amount of accessible landscape.
