Japanese Garden

Memphis Botanic Garden

The first project Ritchie Smith Associates (RSA) completed for the Memphis Botanic Garden was the redesign of the seven-acre traditional Japanese Garden. The renewal included reshaping and stabilizing the pond, and adding "tortoise and crane" islands and a cobble beach. A new entrance gateway, pathways, bridges, sculptural landforms, extensive planting, and stone work were added to enrich the garden through two phases of work. RSA collaborated with the late Dr. Koichi Kawana of Los Angeles on selection of lanterns and placement of stones and specimen plant material. The garden is also known as the Garden of Tranquility.
