Brian Brown Memorial Greenway

Memphis, Tennessee

The Brian Brown Memorial Greenway connects downtown Martin with the University of Tennessee-Martin campus. After initially preparing a master plan for the 1.9-mile greenway, Ritchie Smith Associates (RSA) designed the first phase of the route that follows an abandoned railroad right-of-way within a predominantly rural and scenic area. The asphalt trail accommodates pedestrian and bicycle travel, and includes a bridge at its midpoint and trailhead parking at each end. Custom-designed bollards and timber rails prevent vehicular access to the trail. The downtown segment connects with streetscape improvements subsequently designed by RSA. Where the greenway intersects with streets, safe crossing is provided by traffic signage, crosswalk striping and concrete trail entry aprons. Custom-designed identification signage, planting and site furnishings enhance trail usage.
